What is HFFI?

In 1955, a group of dedicated local citizens, alarmed by the destruction of several architectural and historical landmarks in Fredericksburg, banded together to form the Historic Fredericksburg Foundation. They vowed to:

• Protect the Fredericksburg area’s rich cultural heritage;

• Promote awareness of, and interest in local preservation issues; and

• Inform future generations about the benefits of preservation for our quality of life.

In the beginning, the Foundation identified, purchased, and stabilized endangered buildings. Though successful, the group quickly realized that preserving places required a more holistic approach and broader community support.

The Foundation established several education and outreach services to help promote public awareness of our historic resources:

• The Marker Program

• An Oral History series

• Workshops, lectures, roundtables, and other public outreach events

• Historical tours

• The Annual Journal of Fredericksburg History

HFFI’s advocacy efforts include lobbying for effective and creative public policies supporting preservation, revitalization, and the appropriate use and development of Fredericksburg’s historic neighborhoods and resources. Events like HFFI’s annual Candlelight Tour of historic homes also encourage heritage tourism—a vital part of the region’s economy.
